London is the capital of the United Kingdom and
is among the most important cities of the world. It covers 1,579 square
kilometers of area in the south-eastern area of Great Britain, and it enjoys a
lot of importance geographically, politically, culturally, and socially. It is
103 kilometers from Portsmouth, 128 kilometers from Southampton, 74 kilometers
from Brighton, and 193 kilometers from Bristol. London is not too far from some
important cities, it is 519 kilometers away from Belfast, 264 kilometers from
Manchester, and 554 kilometers away from Glasgow. London was built around River
Thames, and till a few centuries ago all major parts of the city were close to
the port. It is still an important part of the city.
London has expanded a lot over the years, and
there are multiple ways to define its boundary. The City of London is a
subdivision of the Great London Area. There are 32 other subdivisions which
come under Greater London, and these are defined as inner boroughs and outer
boroughs. Inner boroughs are the boroughs which are directly around London; the
outer boroughs are around the inner boroughs. The inner boroughs are Southwark,
Camden, Lewisham, Hackney, Islington, Greenwich, Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith,
Lambeth, Wandsworth, Tower Hamlets, and Westminster. The outer boroughs are
Sutton, Barking, Kingston upon Thames, Redbridge, Bromley, Richmond upon
Thames, Ealing, Merton, Enfield, Haringey, Bexley, Harrow, Brent, Havering,
Newham, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Croydon, and Waltham Forest.
