Ghana to independence. On March 6, 1957, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah announced
independence of the country from Great Britain. He holds an important position
in the country considering that he was also the first president of Ghana. This

and 6th March of every year, you can witness the Celebration of
Emancipation Day and Independence Anniversary respectively. Visit the memorial

the Cape Coast Castle (The Gate of no Return)
When
you hear someone talk about Ghana or Cape Coast, what comes in mind is the
slave trade. This is actually one of the best tourist
sites in Ghana where you get to learn more about the slave trade.
Slaves stopped here en-route to the Americas, and that is why it is known as
the “Gate of no Return”. There is a video documentary, you get to see how they
slaves were transferred, the cramped and dark rooms, as well as the slave route,
maps as you learn more about the past. Whisky bottles, firearms and glass beads
can also be seen in the castle museum. The castle was later used by the British
governor as his headquarters.
